North Aegean

Olive oil production

Lesvos: The areas of Lesvos in which olives are cultivated are mountainous or hilly with dry and poor soils as far as the organic substances are concerned.
Because of the mountainous areas and the inaccessibility of olive groves, there is a limited use of fertilizers in the olive trees.
This peculiarity of crop in combination with each specific cultivar is what gives the lesbian olive oil a light golden colour, flavour superiority and enrichment in flavorings.
It is noteworthy that the lesbian olive oil is characterized by a relatively high degree of unsaturated fatty acids, which grant an additional organic value in it.
It has been recognized by the European Union as a Protected Geographical Indication product and the designations of origin for “Mytilene”, “Kalloni Lesvos” and “Plomárion Lesvos” have been approved as PDO extra virgin olive oils.As far as the cultivated cultivars are concerned, the most well-known are “Koloni” (also known as “Mytilinia”) with strong flavour, smooth, sweet taste, which is regarded as one of the best cultivars for oil extraction and “Adramytini”, which produces thin flowing oil with excellent flavour.
